What is the best month to visit Madeira?

I guide here in every month of the year, and the honest starting point is that Madeira does not have a bad season. The climate is mild throughout, which is why the island has its reputation as a year-round destination and why the answer to this question is never a single month.

What does change is worth understanding, because it decides whether you get the trip you pictured.

The thing that matters more than the month

Madeira has microclimates, and they are not a marketing phrase. The north can be wet while the south is dry. Funchal can be in sunshine while Pico do Arieiro is inside a cloud, and the reverse happens just as often.

This is why a monthly average tells you very little. On any given morning I check live weather stations before deciding where to go, and I change the route when the peak is closed in. If you are planning yourself, build that flexibility in rather than booking a sunrise for one fixed morning and hoping.

What the wetter months give you

More rain, particularly in the north, and more cloud on the high ground. In exchange the island is at its greenest, the laurel forest is at its most atmospheric, and the waterfalls run hard. Some of them are genuinely impressive in winter and modest by late summer.

Fanal in fog is one of the best things on this island, and fog is not in short supply in the cooler months.

What the drier months give you

Better odds at the peaks, warmer sea, and long light for the coastal drives. Also more people. The well-known viewpoints fill up, the sunrise car park at Pico do Arieiro fills up earlier, and the popular levadas are busy by mid morning.

The peaks are cold in every month

This is the single most useful thing I can tell you and the thing people most often get wrong. Even in high summer the peaks can be genuinely chilly before dawn. Warm layers, long trousers and a windproof jacket, whatever the calendar says. You will take them off two hours later back down at the coast.

So which month should you pick?

Pick your month around your own constraints, then plan the days around the weather when you get here. That is the reverse of how most people do it and it produces better trips.

If you want the forest, the waterfalls and quiet viewpoints, come in the cooler, wetter part of the year and accept that some days will be grey. If you want the best chance at clear peaks and warm swimming, come in the warmer months and go early to everything.
