Is the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro worth it?

Pico do Arieiro is the third highest point on Madeira and you can drive almost to the top of it, which is why it is the sunrise everyone talks about. On the right morning you stand above an unbroken floor of cloud with the peaks coming out of it. There is not much else like it.

It is also, on the wrong morning, a cold car park inside a grey cloud. Both are real, and knowing that in advance is most of what makes the trip worth it.

How cold is it really?

Colder than anyone expects. Even in summer the peaks can be genuinely chilly before dawn, and I tell every guest the same thing: warm layers, long trousers and a windproof jacket. People turn up in shorts in August because Funchal was twenty-five degrees when they left, and they spend the sunrise in the car.

You will drop back down to the coast a couple of hours later and peel it all off. Bring it anyway.

The crowds, and the thing nobody mentions

Most people park at the top and stand by the radar tower, elbow to elbow, competing for space with selfie sticks. It works, and it is not the experience the photographs sold you.

There are quieter ridges within a short walk that look out over the same sea of clouds without the crowd. That is where I take people, with chairs and blankets and something hot, because standing in the dark waiting for the sun is much better sitting down.

What if the peak is in cloud?

This is the part worth planning for. Madeira is famous for its microclimates and the peak can be completely whited out while Funchal is clear, or the reverse. It is not predictable a week ahead and it is barely predictable the night before.

I track live weather stations in the morning and change the route if the peak is closed in, finding a clear viewpoint above or below the cloud line instead. If you are driving yourself, check before you commit to the climb, and have a second option in mind rather than a wasted alarm clock.

What time should you leave?

From Funchal the drive is roughly forty five minutes to an hour, and you want to be there before first light rather than at sunrise itself, because the twenty minutes before the sun appears are often better than the moment it does. Work back from the sunrise time for your date and add a buffer.

Is this the same as the Stairway to Heaven walk?

No, and this is where people get confused. The famous ridge walk, the PR1, starts here and runs to Pico Ruivo. That is a serious mountain hike with tunnels, exposure and its own rules, and since the 2024 wildfire it has reopened with a ticketing system and a one-way route.

Standing at Pico do Arieiro for sunrise is a different thing entirely. You can do it in normal clothes and warm layers without walking the ridge at all. If you want the full traverse, read up on the PR1 separately and plan it as its own day.

Is it worth it?

On a clear morning, yes, without hesitation. On a cloudy one you will have got up at four to see fog, which is why I would rather move the plan than promise you a sunrise I cannot control.
